About
Vat Phou is a ruined Khmer Hindu temple complex set against the dramatic backdrop of Phou Kao mountain in southern Laos. Built between the 5th and 15th centuries, it predates Angkor Wat and was the spiritual center of the early Khmer empire. The site stretches from a riverside sanctuary across terraced gardens and tree-lined avenues to the mountain shrine above, creating a sacred axis between earth and sky.
History
Vat Phou was established as a sacred Hindu site as early as the 5th century AD, dedicated to Shiva whose presence was associated with the linga-shaped peak of Phou Kao. The Khmer kings of Angkor expanded and embellished the site during the 11th–13th centuries. After the decline of the Khmer Empire, Vat Phou was converted to Theravada Buddhism and remains an active pilgrimage site today.
