Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world, originally constructed as a Hindu temple and gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century. The Angkor complex spans over 400 km² and contains the magnificent remains of several capitals of the Khmer Empire.

History

Built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II, Angkor Wat was the state temple and political center of the Khmer Empire.
